Why your Google Business Profile is not showing in search results

BossProWebsites · Local SEO · December 1, 2025

You set up your Google Business Profile months ago, but when you search for your own service in your own city, your listing is nowhere to be found. No Map Pack. No knowledge panel. Nothing. Meanwhile, competitors you’ve never heard of are sitting at the top. This is one of the most frustrating situations for a service business owner — and it almost always has a fixable cause. Let’s walk through the real reasons this happens, one by one.

Your profile isn’t verified

This is the most common culprit. Creating a Google Business Profile and verifying it are two different steps. If you never completed verification — usually done by postcard, phone call, or video — your listing won’t appear in search. Log in to your Google Business Profile dashboard and check whether a verification prompt is still pending. If it is, complete it immediately. Until verification is done, you have no presence in Google’s local results at all.

Your profile has been suspended

Google suspends Business Profiles for a variety of reasons: address issues, suspected policy violations, keyword stuffing in the business name, or listing a business at a location it doesn’t actually operate from. If your profile has been suspended, you’ll see a notice in your dashboard. You’ll need to submit a reinstatement request, fix the underlying issue, and wait for Google to review it.

You’re a service-area business with the wrong settings

If you go to customers rather than having them come to your location (which describes most service businesses — plumbers, electricians, roofers, landscapers), you should be set up as a “service area business” in Google. That means you hide your physical address and instead list the cities and zip codes you serve. If your address is set to display but you’re actually working from a home or a non-public address, Google may suppress your listing for not meeting its guidelines. Check your address settings and switch to service area if you’re in this situation.

Your category and business information are incomplete or wrong

Google needs to understand exactly what your business does to know when to show it. If your primary category is vague or incorrect — or if your services, description, and hours aren’t filled in — Google has less confidence in matching your profile to relevant searches. Make sure:

You’re searching from outside your service area

Google’s local results are tied to the searcher’s physical location. If you’re searching from a location that’s outside the area your listing is associated with, you may simply not appear — not because something is wrong, but because you’re not in the geographic range Google is showing results for. Try searching from your actual service area, or use a tool like Local Falcon or GeoGrid to see how you rank at different locations across your city.

Your competitors have stronger signals

Even a fully verified, complete profile can be buried if your competitors have stronger local SEO signals — more reviews, more consistent citations, more activity, and a better-optimized website. The Map Pack only shows three businesses. If you’re not in the top three, you need to outcompete the businesses that are.

That means gathering more reviews, building more local citations, adding location pages to your website, and keeping your profile active with posts and photos. A strong local SEO strategy works on all of these fronts simultaneously — because it’s rarely one thing holding you back, but the total weight of your local presence compared to your competitors.

New profiles take time

If you’ve only had your profile for a few weeks, some patience is in order. Google takes time to index and trust new listings, especially in competitive markets. Complete everything, stay active, and give it 60–90 days before drawing conclusions. If you’re still invisible after that, dig deeper into the causes above.

The good news: every issue on this list is fixable. Most of them can be resolved in an afternoon with the right information — which means your Map Pack position is closer than you might think.
